Optowell Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) - Chips
Optowell
VCSEL Chips are supplied as single chips or arrays with
wavelengths from 670nm to 980nm.
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are compound semiconductor microlaser diodes that emit light in a circular beam vertically from the surface of a fabricated wafer and offer significant advantages when compared to the edge-emitting lasers currently used in the majority of fiber optic communications devices. Advantages include:
- Circular, low divergence output beams providing high coupling efficiency to optical fiber
- Simpler fabrication compared to edge-Emitting lasers
- Manufacturing cost saved by allowing on-Wafer testing
- Small active volumes leading to low threshold currents and low power consumption
- High volume / high density production
- Ease of packaging
- Ease of 2D-Array
VCSEL applications include:
- digital media: laser printer, laser mouse, DVI, HDMI, high speed PCB, Home network
- Automobile: inner multimedia network, safety sensor, etc.
- Information & Communication: Gigabit Ethernet, SAN, SONET, VSR
- Sensors: encoder, gas sensor
- Medical and Bio: blood surgical measuring instrument, skin care laser
For Gigabit Ethernet and other gigabit-speed applications such as Fiber Channel and ATM OC-12, VCSELs have proved a very cost-effective solution as they offer the performance characteristics of lasers, particularly high speed, combined with low cost manufacturing processes similar to those used for LEDs.
